Pattern Review: Mommy and Me Seahorse Amigurumi by Loops & Love Crochet

I find hundreds of patterns online that I just adore. Only a small percentage of those patterns that I save are ones that I actually make some day!

Out of that small percentage of patterns that end up on my to-do list, one designer shows up more often than the others. That person is Amanda over at Loops & Love Crochet. I’m not sure if she knows just what kinds of patterns I look for, or the fact that I can never turn down a sea creature, but when I find a new pattern and see that it was made by her, I’m hardly surprised.

Today’s review is another one of her great patterns, the Mommy and Me Seahorse Amigurumi pattern.

What first attracted me to the pattern not only was the fact that it’s a seahorse, but rather the potential I saw to make different color combinations. I loved the idea of picking out contrasting colors for the body and the mane/tail of the pattern. In fact, when making mine I let my mom pick out the color for the mane and tail, making it even more special.

Actually, I love how Amanda chose to make the colors of the mommy and baby seahorses opposite of the other.

I decided to make just the mommy seahorse. I was thinking about how I was going to sell these guys at my next craft show, and decided that one size would be best.

Another great thing about this pattern is the fact that you can really just use scraps of yarn!

My Thoughts About the Pattern

The pattern is written extremely well, and is super easy to follow. You need to know basic amigiurumi stitches, like sc, and dc, as well as hdc for the mane. I honestly thought that the tail would be tricky, but she does a fantastic job of illustrating how to do it.

She also gives you the option to add eyelashes to the mommy seahorse. I chose to leave this part out though (I personally get freaked out when I have to embroider!).

Another great thing is that Amanda also offers a paid PDF version for those of us who like to print out copies of our patterns.

What Would I have Done Differently?

There’s only one thing I would have done differently with my seahorse, and that is change the eyes I used. Normally I use plain black 9mm safety eyes for my amigurumi projects, but I decided to try out a clear pair. I feel like the eyes I chose look too human, and it freaks me out a little bit.

Other than that, I wouldn’t change anything! I’m extremely happy with how my seahorse came out.
