One of the biggest issues crafters have when trying to sell their items is photography. If you don’t have an attractive shot of your item, people can’t imagine its potential.
Product photography is something I’ve struggled with for years. YEARS. My photos would come out blurry, or blown out with light. My backgrounds would be either a cluttered room, or a dingy table or piece of cloth.
Eventually I received a dress form from my mom for Christmas, and my photos got slightly better. However, I’ve always been the kind of person to strive to improve even further.
As cell phone cameras got better, eventually my pictures got a little better too, but something was missing. That’s when I decided to put a new fancy camera on my Christmas list.
Well don’t you know, Santa delivered! (Santa in husband form, that is). He bought me a Canon Rebel t6i, and I must tell you, I’m in love! My photos started coming out much clearer, which really tickled my soul.
I also received a light box from my mom (they must have been working together, those sneaky sneakies). I quickly realized that this is one thing I have been missing for all those years.
After playing around with the camera for a bit, I noticed that I still had one problem: the messy house background.
My friend and neighbor is a photographer. We took the kids there a couple times for some shots, and her studio is inspirational. She has props, sunlight, a desk, and…backdrops.
Now, I never thought about photographing people, but I got the idea that perhaps a backdrop would make a huge difference in my product photography. So, I went to Amazon and found a couple backdrops that I liked, along with the equipment to properly hang them. I bit the bullet and bought them!
Now, I’m no professional, that’s for sure. I have a LOT of learning to do still. But I must say, my photos looks SO much better than they have for the past few years. I’m thrilled.
I’m excited to continue to learn and grow with my product photography, and maybe someday, my Etsy shop will be on point! (Tips are always welcome, just comment below!)
